You Can't Hate Yourself Into Becoming Someone You Love

You Can't Hate Yourself Into Becoming Someone You Love

Every butterfly was once a caterpillar.

We celebrate the butterfly because its beauty symbolizes the transformation that we crave. Yet, we rarely stop to admire the caterpillar. Maybe because it's slower, less elegant or closer to the ground.

I mean, if you had to choose which stage of the journey you wanted to be, almost everyone would choose the butterfly.

But here's what's interesting:

The butterfly never exists without the caterpillar.

Before there were wings, there was a tiny creature spending its days doing something that didn't look remarkable at all. It crawled. It ate. It quietly gathered everything it would one day need. So before anyone could admire the transformation, the work had already begun.

That made me wonder how many of us are living like caterpillars while criticizing ourselves for not already being butterflies.

Maybe that's why so many journeys feel heavier than they need to.

Whether you're trying to build a business, gain muscle, lose weight, learn a new skill, or simply become a better version of yourself, it's surprisingly easy to become so obsessed with where you're going that you begin resenting the person who's carrying you there.

You stop seeing yourself as someone becoming.

Instead, you see yourself as someone who isn't enough yet.

"I'll be proud of myself when..."

"I'll finally feel beautiful when..."

"I'll deserve to celebrate once..."

It's amazing how often we place our own kindness somewhere in the future, as if encouragement is something that should only arrive after we've already succeeded. But growth doesn’t work that way.

I think one of the biggest misconceptions about transformation is that people believe self-love is the reward waiting at the finish line. Self-love is the fuel that gets you there!

Consider it a little gift for the girl you're becoming.

Imagine if the caterpillar refused to eat because it was ashamed of how slowly it moved.

Imagine if it spent every day wishing it already had wings instead of gathering the nourishment it needed.

Then, there would never be a butterfly.

The very things that allow transformation to happen require care in the present, not admiration in the future. So maybe it's time to feed ourselves with patience and celebrate small wins.

This is also why I don't like the phrase "fake it until you make it."

It suggests that the person you are today isn't enough. The more I think about it, the more I realize that growth isn't really about becoming someone completely different.

It's about taking such good care of the person you are today that one day you look up and realize she quietly became the woman you used to dream about.

So don't rush to become the butterfly. Instead, fuel the caterpillar. So that one day, when you finally spread your wings, you’d look back at the girl who got you there with gratitude rather than shame.

Because without her… there never would've been a butterfly.
